Gospel Shaped Marriage

Pastor Aaron continues our Groundwork series by exploring how the gospel transforms marriage according to Ephesians 5. We discover that God designed marriage between a man and woman to reflect the Trinity's partnership and serve as a mirror of Christ's love for the church. We learn that both husbands and wives have countercultural callings—wives to honor and respect, husbands to sacrificially love and serve. We are challenged to let our marriages become covenant relationships of promise-keeping that point a watching world to the ultimate covenant keeper, Jesus.

The Gospel and Family

Pastor Aaron Buer teaches about the power of the Gospel to shape our family relationships. Through this conversation, we are challenged to live out our identity in Christ as completely full and recognize we don’t need anyone else to fill us. This truth enables us to live out love and respect in marriage relationships, empowers us to honor our parents and helps us train up our children in the ways of Jesus.

The Radical Way

Senior Pastor Jeff Manion unpacks three implications of the cross-shaped life. Through this conversation, we see that the cross impacts marriages, status and identity. We are challenged to consider what is shaping us and what we are being shaped into. Mark 10:1-31

Hannah’s Sorrow

God’s vision for marriage in Genesis 2:24 is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, yet by the time of 1 Samuel, that vision had long been compromised. In the ancient world, many men married multiple wives. Such is the case with a man named Elkanah and his two wives, Hannah and Peninnah. Peninnah is able to have children, while Hannah remains unable to conceive. Peninnah uses that advantage as a weapon, mocking and taunting Hannah year after year. Hannah is full of grief—weeping so deeply she cannot eat. And layered on top of her personal anguish is the weight of cultural shame, since infertility in that world carries public humiliation. Her sorrow is raw and visible...

Nourish and Cherish

Paul now turns his attention to the men of the young Ephesian church. His words are as countercultural to them as his message to the women. Husbands are to love their wives in the same way Jesus loves his church. This is sacrificial love. It is a revolutionary concept for the Greco-Roman world because in their culture, marriage is often for status, not for love, and commitment is relative to a man’s power and influence. Other than providing material needs, a man is not required to do more. Paul tells the Ephesian men this isn’t what God requires. God requires men to live out his great love...

Covenant in Marriage

Paul understands marriage as a covenantal relationship: two partners who make binding promises to each other and work together to reach a common goal. The covenants God makes with humans spread across the pages of the Bible, including Adam and Eve, Abraham, Israel, and David. Paul tells the Ephesians that the covenant of marriage is unique. The promises kept between two imperfect people reveal the kind of relationship God desires to have with his people—one involving self-sacrifice, delight, and honor. Marriage also points to the ultimate covenant keeper, Jesus. Through the cross, believers can find hope...
