Why Is Jesus Confusing?

Pastor Jeff Manion concludes our "You Asked for It" sermon series by exploring why Jesus was confusing. We examine why Jesus wasn't the Savior people expected and how his priorities often differed from ours. Through Jesus's healing miracles and powerful teaching, we see God's heart for both physical and spiritual restoration, with spiritual reconciliation as his highest priority. We're challenged to move beyond distractions in our digital age to truly hear Jesus's parables and teachings. This message invites us to recognize Jesus's divine authority, understand the forgiveness available through him.

The Verdict

Pastor Jeff Manion concludes our "Is Jesus Worth Following?" series by examining Jesus's restoration mission in Matthew 9:18-34. We explore Jesus's compassion for those who have struggled long, his power to restore health, life, sight, and speech, and the importance of trusting him. The sermon highlights the decision point we all face regarding Jesus's identity and authority, drawing on Old Testament prophecies and historical evidence. We're invited to see Jesus as the Good Shepherd who offers true life and ultimate restoration, challenging us to follow him wholeheartedly.

The Way

Jesus’s disciples have seen him perform many miracles and heard him affirm his identity as God. Yet, this band of misfits is also troubled and uncertain about all he has claimed. After reminding them of his impending death on the cross, Jesus reassures them that even if he departs from them, they still have access to the Father. Jesus has come as the way to true life, and no one comes to the Father except through him.

Be Ready

The apostles are the ideal representatives of the gospel. They witnessed Jesus’s death and resurrection. They personally experienced his teaching and miracles. So, Peter encourages suffering Christians throughout the Roman Empire. He calls them to “be prepared to give an answer.” He wants them to see persecution, trial, insult and questioning as opportunities to share the good news of Jesus. Peter experienced God’s provision and presence as he shared the reason for his hope while under trial. He calls persecuted Christians to be prepared to courageously do the same.

Historically Reliable Testimony

The stories of what Jesus did and taught aren’t works of fiction, nor did they float down from heaven for someone to discover. In 1 John, the apostle tells his readers, “We were there!” John says he is passing on what the disciples heard, saw and touched. They were around the table with Jesus, on the road, in the boat and in the garden with him. They were at the foot of the cross and in his empty tomb. John spoke with him, listened to him teach and witnessed his miracles. Simply put, John was with Jesus and wrote down what he experienced (along with three other writers of the gospels).
