Great Treasure
At the center of God’s kingdom stands the King himself. Life in the kingdom means life with Jesus. He is the treasure in the field and the pearl of great value. Jesus promises rest to the weary and burdened ( Matthew 11:28 ). He promises the light of life to all who follow him ( John 8:12 ). He declares himself the resurrection and the life ( John 11:25 ). Unlike every other voice, Jesus never breaks his word. So when he calls people to repent, he does not simply call them away from sin. He calls them to himself.
Trading Up
Jesus leaves the crowds and steps into a house, where he shares these two parables with his disciples ( Matthew 13:36 ). Like the men in these parables, his disciples understand what it means to trade up. Peter, Andrew, James, and John have walked away from their fishing nets ( Matthew 4:18–22 ). Matthew, the man who will later record these words, has abandoned a profitable tax booth to follow Jesus ( Matthew 9:9 ). Their livelihoods, security, and plans have stayed behind. Yet in Jesus, they find what the man in the field finds: something worth more than everything they own. Jesus does not describe that choice as grim duty. The man sells everything “in his joy” ( Matthew 13:44 ). The disciples know that joy firsthand. They have traded up for life with Jesus.
Repent!
Pastor Luke Koskinen brings a message on the first word of Jesus’s public ministry: “Repent.” We discover that repentance isn’t a call away from the good life but an invitation to trade up, turning from sin and toward the King and his kingdom. Through the parables of the hidden treasure and the pearl, we learn that Jesus himself is the treasure worth more than everything we own. We are challenged to surrender control, make repentance a daily practice, and turn to Jesus with joy.
Spaces | The Temple
In the final week of our Spaces series, Sam Schubkegel steps into the host chair for the first time, joined by Amelia Rhodes and first-time guest Nancy Erickson. Nancy holds a PhD in Hebrew Bible and the Ancient Near East, is an editor at Zondervan Academic, and has been a longtime resource for our teaching pastors. She shares how living and traveling in Israel has brought Scripture to life for her, and walks us through what archaeologists are uncovering right now around the Temple Mount and the City of David. Together, the team talks about how God designed sacred spaces like the tabernacle and the temple, yet he can’t be contained by any building. Through Jesus, his people are now his temple. Sam and Amelia close with this week’s focus on holiness and the Greek word hagios , meaning “set apart.” Beyond the Weekend will take a week off and return on November 4 with the start of the Discipleship Journey series. The Temple
Pastor Aaron Buer concludes our Spaces series by exploring The Temple, tracing God’s heart to dwell with his people from Eden to the cross and beyond. We discover that Adam and Eve were created first to know and enjoy God in the garden, and that God later asked for a tabernacle and temple so he could “dwell among them.” We learn that sin brought “access denied,” but when the temple curtain tore from top to bottom at Jesus’s death, it became “access granted” to everyone who trusts him. We are challenged to live as the temple of the living God, turning from whatever doesn’t reflect his presence in us.
Spaces | The Land of Promise
In this episode of the Beyond the Weekend Podcast, Stephen Lewis and Amelia Rhodes sit down with Pastor Aaron Buer to explore what it really means to live a blessed life. As they unpack the first message in the Spaces series, they challenge the common idea that blessing means comfort, success, or getting what we want, and instead point to the deeper blessing of knowing and trusting God—even in seasons of suffering and uncertainty. Through honest conversation about pain, unanswered prayer, community, and learning to trust God’s promises over time, they explore how we can become conduits of God’s blessing to the people around us. The conversation ultimately invites us to consider: What might need to change in our lives for us to become more of a conduit of blessing? Resources mentioned in this episode: Join us! Kids Hope USA 2026, Mentor Story
Sometimes the most meaningful ministry doesn't happen from a stage—it happens across a small table in a school library, over a game, a book, or a simple conversation. Week after week, Kids Hope mentors show up for one child, offering a listening ear, encouragement, and the steady presence of someone who cares. These relationships may seem ordinary, but God uses them in extraordinary ways. We believe every child is created in God's image and deeply loved by him. By faithfully investing just one hour each week, mentors become a tangible expression of Christ's love and hope, reminding students they are seen, valued, and never alone. Watch to discover how God is using simple acts of faithfulness to make an eternal impact—one child, one relationship, one hour at a time.
