“For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations.” Luke 2:30-31
Listen: Luke 2
Like the rest of Israel, Simeon felt the burden of sixty years under the heavy hand of Roman occupation. His people have lost hope. The prophecy of a Messiah has faded to a whisper, but the Holy Spirit of God has revealed to Simeon he will not die before seeing the Messiah. The promise is starting to get old when something wonderful happens. On a day like any other, a baby boy is placed in Simeon’s arms, and his heart jumps. This baby is the awaited one for hope. He is the promised One, and Simeon breaks into a song of praise.
Mary and Joseph bring the nearly two-month-old Jesus to the temple to offer a sacrifice according to the law for first-born sons (Leviticus 12:6). In awe and wonder, they listen to Simeon praise God for their baby, “…a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel” (Luke 2:32). Simeon’s song expresses God’s deep desire to be known by all people—and Jesus will be the way for all people to know him.
