The Word

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1
John is a disciple who has witnessed the ministry and crucifixion of Jesus, including seeing and speaking with him after his resurrection. To teach others about Jesus’s identity and purpose, John writes a gospel account, or biography, of Jesus’s life. Here, he opens by connecting the identity of Jesus with the eternal God who created all things. Jesus, the Word, is one with God the Father (“the Word was God”), but he’s also distinct (he was “with God”). Throughout the Old Testament, the “Word” of God refers to the self-expression or revelation of God. John carries that idea forward in identifying Jesus as the true and full revelation of God himself.
The testimony of Scripture and the claims of Jesus’s disciples reveal his identity as God in flesh. As a result, we can have confidence about who Jesus is and what he accomplished. God’s Word is not a book of fables or crafted tales written in isolation. The Bible, including the gospels of Jesus, is rooted in verifiable history and eyewitness accounts. We can trust what it says about the identity and work of Jesus.
TODAY: Take time to praise Jesus, the divine Word who reveals God to us. Reflect on who he is and what he has done as revealed in the pages of Scripture. After reflecting, thank God for the blessing of knowing Jesus. Continue your praise by singing with our worship team, “All Hail King Jesus.”
