THREE THINGS TO KNOW
DON’T MISS THIS. Our YOUNG ADULTS are hosting a special worship gathering on October 9! This is a great opportunity for those in their twenties and thirties to connect while experiencing meaningful worship together. Whether you’re new to Ada Bible or have been part of our community for years, you’re invited to join us for an evening of worship, fellowship and community. GROUP VALUES. This September, we’re focusing on the value of INVITATION. Moses’s story reminds us that God often invites us into his purposes during life’s detours and difficult seasons. Just as God invited Moses to “turn aside” and see the burning bush, he invites us to turn away from our distractions and failures to see what he’s doing. Consider who in your life might need an invitation to experience God’s grace and purpose, especially those who feel like failures or believe their best days are behind them.
GROW AS A LEADER. Sometimes group members feel like failures or believe God can’t use them because of their past. As a leader, create space for vulnerable conversations while pointing people toward God’s grace and purpose. Remember that Moses was eighty years old when God called him to his greatest work. It’s never too late for God to use someone in powerful ways.
DISCUSSION GUIDE
Welcome to the fourth week of our sermon series, EPIC. This week, we encounter Moses at a pivotal moment—he feels like a complete failure, yet God meets him in the wilderness and reveals his heart for the broken and hurting.
ICEBREAKER
What’s something you tried to learn or master but eventually gave up because it just wasn’t working?
THIS WEEK’S TEXT
Have someone read Exodus 3:1-14 aloud.
What details stand out to you in this passage?
What does God reveal about himself in his conversation with Moses?
How does Moses respond to God’s calling, and what concerns does he express?
THIS WEEK’S SERMON
Pastor Brad Holmes continued our EPIC sermon series by exploring Moses’s encounter with God at the burning bush. As a group, recall some of the sermon’s big ideas and main points.
In the EPIC series so far, we’ve seen God choose and work through the most unlikely people. How does this differ from the people our culture celebrates and chooses to elevate?
When Moses says, “I will go over and see this strange sight,” he had to turn away from his sheep to focus on God. What are some things that capture our attention and prevent us from seeing what God might be doing around us?
Moses had been living as a shepherd in the wilderness for forty years when God called him. What does this teach us about God’s timing?
What dead ends or unexpected circumstances have you experienced, and how did God meet you in them?
God reveals himself to Moses as “I Am who I Am,” revealing that God is unchanging and all-powerful. How might we change the way we approach problems and challenges in light of these attributes of God?
Moses kept saying, “I can’t,” while God kept saying, “I will.” Where in your life are you feeling “I can’t,” and need to shift your attention to God’s power and ability?
God told Moses, “I have seen…I have heard…I am concerned…I have come down.” Ultimately, God sent Jesus because he has seen, heard and is concerned about our sin. How could remembering this truth about Jesus and God’s concern help you in your struggles with sin?
WRAP UP
We can see a pattern throughout Scripture: God appears, God reveals, God sends. Where do you sense God might be sending you to share his love and truth with others?
