DISCUSSION GUIDE
Welcome to the fourth week in our sermon series, ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS. We’ll talk about Jesus’s encounter with a woman accused by a group of religious leaders.
What are you most looking forward to for Memorial Day Weekend?
THIS WEEK’S TEXT
Have someone read John 8:1-11 aloud.
How does Jesus respond to the events of this passage?
Why do you think the religious leaders respond as they do to Jesus?
What else stands out to you or surprises you in this passage?
THIS WEEK’S SERMON
Pastor Brad Holmes discussed John’s story of Jesus’s encounter with a woman caught in a delicate and broken situation. As a group, name his main points.
Which point stood out to you the most? Why?
The religious leaders try to trap Jesus with a question that has no easy answer. What situations in our world seem impossible with no easy answers?
How does Jesus’s response to this woman’s impossible situation show his trustworthiness for our impossible situations?
What does Jesus’s one-on-one encounter with the woman reveal about God’s heart for us in our sin and shame?
How have you experienced God’s compassion and forgiveness in your brokenness?
Jesus restores the woman and then challenges her to go and live differently. Where is Jesus challenging you to live differently and follow him?
What is one step you can take toward Jesus this week in that area? Consider sharing with your group and committing to pray for each other.
Is there anything else from the sermon you would like to discuss today?
WRAP UP
Today we discussed Jesus’s encounter with a woman in a broken situation. What impacted you the most in this discussion, and how can you live differently as a result?
