THREE THINGS TO KNOW
DON’T MISS THIS

GROUP VALUES
This July, we’re focusing on FORMATIVE CONVERSATIONS. Formative Conversations in a small group can redirect, refresh and re-engage your group. This sometimes requires creativity and boldness in getting everyone to share. Look for an opportunity this week to ask a follow-up question that draws out a group member’s heart.

DISCUSSION GUIDE
Welcome to Week 12 in our sermon series, ENCOUNTERS WITH JESUS. Today we consider the story of Jesus’s encounter with the devil.
What has been your favorite part of summer so far?
THIS WEEK’S TEXT
Have someone read Luke 4:1-13 aloud.
The devil began each temptation with an “If” question. What is the significance of this?
What does this story teach you about the character of Jesus?
What stands out to you most in this story?
THIS WEEK’S SERMON
Pastor Brad Holmes talked about the devil’s temptation of Jesus. As a group, name his main points.
Which part of the sermon impacted you the most, and why?
In one of the temptations, Jesus responded that we should “Worship the Lord your God and serve him only” (Luke 4:8; quoting Deuteronomy 6:13). Worship implies giving allegiance or devotion to another. What are some things people worship in the world today other than God?
What would it look like for you to more fully worship the Lord your God only?
Pastor Brad spoke about those who put their faith in Jesus being adopted into God’s family (Ephesians 1:5). In what situations are we most at risk of forgetting who God says we are because of Jesus?
Jesus responded to every temptation with Scripture. What has been your experience with Scripture memory? If you have an example, share a verse that has helped you remember who you are in Jesus.
Jesus was committed to resisting temptation and fulfilling the mission given to him by God the Father— giving it all to pay for our sins on the cross. What can you do this week to live in a way that gives everything back to God?
Is there anything else about the sermon you wanted to talk about?
