THREE THINGS TO KNOW

DON’T MISS THIS

Communion is next weekend, January 22/23. Take this opportunity to talk to your small group about the significance of communion, what it means to them and how to prepare our hearts for communion.

GROUP VALUES

This month we are focusing on Spiritual Practices. Beyond the Weekend is doing a 2022 Bible Memory Practice memorizing a Bible passage each month. Small groups are a great place to talk about what spiritual practices work for your group members and what practices they’d like to try.

GROW AS A LEADER

Have you checked out our online training built just for small group leaders lately? There are some great resources to help you grow as a leader. Check it out at learning.adabible.org/smallgroups.

DISCUSSION GUIDE

Welcome to the second week of RENEW. Today’s discussion is about the choice we all have to make about whether to follow God or something else.

What’s a hard decision you had to make?

Have your group read Joshua 24 aloud. Each person can take a few verses. What do you notice about these verses? Who is speaking in the different sections?

REFLECT ON GOD’S GOODNESS

Joshua calls the people together at the end of his life. What do you know about Joshua?

God gives the people a message through Joshua. Why do you think God reminds the people of what he has done?

If God were to give this speech to you, what are some things you think God would say?

RECOGNIZE YOUR COMPETING GODS

Joshua tells the people to get rid of the gods from “beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt.” They were holding onto some gods from hundreds of years before. What do you think they hoped these gods would do for them?

Our culture doesn’t have gods made of stone, metal or wood. What does our culture tell us to trust in?

We can look at a grid to help us identify our competing gods. It’s determining your “that”. The thing where you say if only I can get “that” then I’ll have meaning, value, significance or security. What’s “that” for you right now?

What’s the difference between trusting “that” versus trusting in God to give you meaning, value, significance or security?

Choosing to follow God means placing our trust in him. How could you trust in God in that area?

YOUR COMMITMENT

Joshua hasn’t just called the people together to hang out one more time. What choice does Joshua present the leaders with?

Why do you think Joshua goes back and forth with them on it?

Joshua tells the people to “fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness.” What are some ways we can do that today?

How could your group encourage each other to renew your faith together?

WRAP UP

This week we talked about the choice between relying on God or something else. What’s one thing you want to do differently this week?
