Summary: Under the direction of the Lead Pastor, and in coordination with other church staff, the Interim Worship Director will plan elements of worship during weekly Sunday services and special services, as needed (e.g., Good Friday). 

Reports to: Lead Pastor
Position: Non-exempt, hourly

Estimated hours per week: 15-25

*Thornapple Covenant Church is simultaneously searching for a Teaching Pastor. At the time of s/he begins employment, a review of this position will occur as it will then report to the Teaching Pastor.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Work with Lead Pastor to understand and implement the church’s vision for musical worship 

  • Select and arrange music and other elements for weekly worship services 

  • Lead a team of volunteer musicians and vocalists on Sunday morning

  • Participate in elements of the service as needed

  • Work with the Tech Director, Communications Coordinator, and Teaching Worship Assistant to coordinate volunteer teams, plan orders of worship for each service, and any communications-related needs for Sunday mornings  

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and biweekly planning meetings

  • Undertake other duties and projects as assigned



  • Knowledge of worship music, both classic and modern. 

  • Prior experience in planning and leading worship.

  • A collaborative approach to ministry with interpersonal skills showing an ability to lead and work with teams of volunteers.

  • Familiarity with the theology and practice of worship.

  • Commitment to the mission and affirmations of Thornapple Covenant Church and the Evangelical Covenant Church.

  • Physical demands: sit/stand for 1 hour at a time, use hands to finger/handle/feel, talk and listen, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Proficient in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and church management software or equivalent systems.
