Mission

Alternatives in Motion’s mission is to enhance independence through access to mobility equipment. We provide quality used wheelchairs and routine wheelchair repair services to individuals and families demonstrating financial need.

 

Position Overview: The Technician is responsible for working with the Program Manager and Program Coordinator to provide mobility equipment to qualifying recipients. A successful candidate for this position will have demonstrated mechanical knowledge of wheelchairs, excellent customer service skills, and be sensitive to the varying needs of individuals with disabilities.


Job Responsibilities

  • Assist with the delivery of mobility equipment to qualified recipients
  • Use the organization’s handicap accessible vehicle to pick up donations of used mobility equipment
  • Assist with maintaining an inventory of over 150 pieces of mobility equipment
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of mobility equipment storage rooms
  • Clean and sanitize mobility equipment
  • Repair and refurbish mobility equipment (includes: replacing batteries, tires, arm rests, seating systems, and other repairs as necessary)
  • Assist with wheelchair recycling efforts (Includes: Recycling batteries, disassembly of obsolete equipment, delivering used materials to recycling facility, and other tasks as necessary)
  • Pick up/deliver batteries and other part orders from vendors as necessary
  • Work directly with the Program Manager to complete all communications/paperwork used to track mobility equipment.
  • Work directly with the Program Manager to identify the most appropriate piece of equipment for each individual applicant
  • Gather appropriate information from equipment donors to process gift acknowledgement and donation receipts
  • Work closely with Program Manager to oversee volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned by Executive Director

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of previous experience repairing wheelchairs and mobility equipment
  • Knowledgeable of various types of mobility equipment, their functions, and how to maintain equipment in a safe and reliable manner
  • Possess a high level of mechanical knowledge and passion for understanding how things work
  • Dedication to serving the organization’s mission and upholding its values
  • Physical Therapy knowledge preferred, but not required.

Required Qualifications

·       Minimum of a High School Diploma or General Education Degree

·       Excellent Driving Record: Driving record indicates no, or no more than one, moving violation in the past 12 months

·       Sensitive and respectful of personal information and confidentiality issues

·       Willing to serve as an ambassador for the mission of Alternatives in Motion

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

·       Maintain a flexible work schedule to meet the demands of management

·       Many days will be spent indoors in an office or warehouse environment. Some time will be spent in an unheated warehouse

·       Some time will be spent using the company vehicle to pick up and deliver mobility equipment

  • Must possess excellent communication skills
  • Ability to perform duties independently, with minimum need for direct supervision
  • Ability to perform manual tasks that require the use of fine muscle motor skills
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and push wheeled items weighing up to 300 pounds
