About Paychex:

Paychex is a payroll service we use to pay our in-home care providers (by direct deposit). The service calculates the required withholdings (federal and state taxes, social security, Medicare, and unemployment insurance) for the federal and state government and pays them so we don’t have to do it ourselves. We as the employer, as required by law, pay half of the employee’s social security and Medicare, as well as all of the unemployment insurance. These costs along with the payroll service fee add 20 to 25% to the hourly amount we are paying our care providers — so $18 per hour actually costs us somewhere between $21.50 and $22.50 per hour.
