Job Description

Nanny / Childcare - Part-time

The Michigan Nanny Authority: Grand Rapids is now interviewing for the following position:

A loving family in Alger Heights is looking to hire a Part-Time Infant Nanny for 20 hours a week!

First-time parents are looking to hire an experienced, professional career Nanny with experience working with infants to provide top-notch loving care for their infant daughter, who is due mid-July.  Mother is planning to return to work in October when Baby Girl is 3 months old.   Ideally, Nanny would start a week or two before mother returns to work.

Flexibility and reliability are key for this position, as the mother’s hospital work schedule changes monthly and her working hours will vary by day, and the father works 12-hour daytime shifts at a hospital.  Nanny will be asked to work 2-4 days a week, depending on when the parents’ schedules overlap.  The Nanny’s working hours will fall between 5:30am (the earliest requested start time) and 6:30pm (the latest requested end time) Monday-Friday, and most weeks, Nanny will work 20-30 hours.   The majority of shifts Nanny will work are 5-10 hours in length, and there will be a combination of full days, early-morning to mid-afternoon, and mid-afternoon to evening shifts.  Nanny will always know their schedule for the following month(s) at least one month in advance.  Nanny may occasionally be requested to work a later evening, overnight, or weekend shift if the father is on-call when the mother is scheduled to work, and at least one month of advance notice will be given. Nanny will be paid a guaranteed 20 hours per week, even if they work fewer, and will be paid for every hour they work above 20 hours in a week.  Overtime will be paid for every hour worked over 40 in a week, which will be a rare occurrence.

The Nanny will partner with the parents to care for the emotional, social, developmental, and educational needs of Baby Girl as she grows.  The ideal Nanny will have a minimum of 2 years of infant and toddler experience, including a minimum of 1 year of experience working with infants in a professional setting, and excellent references.   They will have knowledge of and/or experience with various approaches to infant care and will be able to adapt to the parent’s desires for the baby as she grows and her wants, needs, and interests change.  They will be welcome to give input and share advice and experiences, but parents want to take the lead in making any changes to the baby’s schedule and routine.  Nanny should be engaging and attentive, able to plan gross and fine motor skills activities and sensory activities, and should be fostering a love of and excitement for learning and exploring the world around them from day one.

The Nanny will also be responsible for light child-related housekeeping, including helping with the baby’s laundry, tidying and maintaining organization in his room and play areas, washing bottles, and cleaning up after meals, activities, and other messes.

The family has one dog and one cat, who will need minimal care and interaction during the day.  Nanny should be comfortable sharing their work environment with the family’s furry children.

The ideal Nanny for this family is a professional career-minded Nanny who is highly flexible and highly reliable.  They are a maternal and loving caregiver who finds personal and professional joy and fulfillment working with infants.  They believe in laying an early foundation for learning by engaging Baby Girl with books, songs, conversation, toys, activities, and experiences.  Their knowledge of infant care will be a valuable resource for the parents and will give them confidence in their Nanny’s ability to handle anything that comes their way.  They will be comfortable and confident in keeping open, honest lines of communication with the parents, sharing important information as it comes up as well as highlights of their days spent playing with and loving on Baby Girl.  The family is open to hiring an experienced Nanny who brings their own child of similar age (infant to toddler) to work with them.

This position requires a long-term commitment to the family, and preference will be given to a candidate who is able to stay for many years.  Pay will start at $18-20 per hour depending on experience and education, and Nanny will have guaranteed pay, paid time off, paid holidays, mileage reimbursement, and other standard nanny benefits.

The right candidate:

  • Will have AT LEAST two years of part- or full-time nanny experience, or at least two years in a daycare or classroom setting.
  • Will have AT LEAST one year of proven childcare experience with infants, will know how to interact with the infants to support learning and encourage their development, and will be able to use their knowledge and experiences to be a support and valuable resource for the parents.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and legal to work in the USA.
  • Will have their own reliable transportation, a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record.
  • Must pass a thorough background check and drug test before starting the position.
  • Must have current CPR/First aid certification or agree to complete a class within 90 days of start-date.
  • Must have flu shot and DTaP vaccine, or be willing to get both before their start date, and must be willing to get a flu shot annually.  Family is also strongly recommending Nanny be fully vaccinated against COVID before their start date (parents will pay for any immunizations.)
