Minister of Worship Arts

Summary: The Minister of Worship Arts will prepare for and lead the congregation in faithful, meaningful, and engaging intergenerational worship. All areas of worship arts will be utilized in a complementary and edifying manner to equip the congregation to more fully worship the Lord. In addition, the Minister of Worship Arts will give oversight of worship-related ministries, will equip God’s people in using their worship gifts, will shepherd those involved in worship ministries, and will collaborate with staff and church leaders to prayerfully grow the worship life of the church so that the body of Christ is built up and the mission of our church enhanced.


Reports to: Teaching Pastor

Position: Full time (1.0 FTE), exempt.


Responsibilities & Duties:

 

Planning

  • In conjunction with the Teaching Pastor, plan and prepare all aspects of Sunday worship services, including special seasonal services and themes (Lent, Pentecost, Advent).

  • Develop a worship-planning process that utilizes the creativity of staff and worship volunteers.

  • Meet weekly with the Teaching Pastor to coordinate Sunday worship.

  • Creatively manage sanctuary decor, paying particular attention to liturgical church seasons.


Leading and Shepherding

  • Oversee the recruitment and scheduling of worship ministry volunteers (instrumentalists, vocalists, sound technicians, video operators).

  • Care for worship volunteers, seeking to help them grow in their faith and use of their worship gifts.

  • Delegate aspects of worship ministry to worship volunteers to intentionally cultivate greater participation and use of worship gifts.

  • Offer pastoral presence and prayer to people after worship services.


Technical Directing

  • Understand and use with proficiency worship software, video & audio technologies, and live stream and filming systems.

  • Oversee the acquisition and care of all worship-related resources, furniture, and technology.

  • Undertake other duties and projects as assigned


Qualifications:

  • Genuine love for worship and a strong desire to enable others to worship in spirit and truth.

  • Exceptional knowledge of worship music, both classic and modern. 

  • An understanding of the theology of worship and a commitment to lifelong learning related to worship practice and theology.

  • College degree (BA or BMus) in music with prior experience in worship planning and music performance. MDiv or MA with a focus on worship theology and liturgy preferred.

  • Prior experience in planning and leading worship in a church setting.

  • A collaborative approach to ministry with strong interpersonal skills showing a clear ability to develop and lead teams.

  • The ability to inspire, encourage and equip others, especially volunteers in worship arts and technical systems.

  • Capability in understanding audio/visual/lighting systems, working with supporting vendors and training volunteers to operate such systems.

  • Commitment to the mission and affirmations of Thornapple Covenant Church and the Evangelical Covenant Church.

  • Holds or is willing to pursue a ministry license with the Evangelical Covenant Church.

  • Physical demands: sit/stand for 1 hour at a time, use hands to finger/handle/feel, talk and listen, lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Proficient in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and church management software or equivalent systems.

 

Vocational Growth

The Minister of Worship Arts will participate in the ministerial and denominational communities and events of the Evangelical Covenant Church. S/He will also be afforded a continuing education budget to enable personal and/or professional development.
