Men’s Center GED Volunteer

Position title: Men’s Center GED Volunteer

Position type: Volunteer (Wednesday mornings, late August through May)

Department: Educational Services

Reports to: Educational Services Manager

Basic Function of position: The Men’s Center GED volunteer is responsible for building relationships with clients, creating an atmosphere of education and inclusion, tutoring clients as directed by the teacher, and fostering spiritual growth. Additional duties may include supporting the GED teacher and Educational Services Manager with set up, clean up, and administrative tasks.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Relational

·        Builds intentional relationships with the group and one on one when possible

·        Participates with Men’s Center Director in 30-minute devotional and prayer time

·        Helps clients set goals for accomplishing their GED

·        Tutors individuals during class time

·        Follows up with clients who have missed class or are struggling, through phone calls or one-on-one meetings when feasible

·        Communicates educational needs or challenges of clients to the teacher or Educational Services Manager

·        Communicates basic needs of clients (e.g., housing, food, referrals) to the Men’s Center Director

·        Shops with clients once a month

 

Logistical/Administrative

·        Takes attendance

·        Assists the teacher with tasks as needed (e.g., making copies)

·        Monitors and proctors test taking

·        Assists with lunch (pick up, set out, and clean up)

·        Cleans and sanitizes the room after class

·        Communicates regularly with the Educational Services Manager

 

 

Qualifications

·        Ability to build relationships and communicate with a diverse group of students

·        Organizational and administrative skills

·        Educational background is a plus
