Job Description:ESL Volunteer

Position title: ESL Volunteer

Position type: Volunteer Thursday morning (three hours per week, including class time and prep at home, early September through Early May) 

Department: Educational Services

Reports to: Educational Services Manager

Basic Function of position: The ESL Teacher is responsible for building relationships with clients, creating an atmosphere of education and inclusion, teaching and tutoring clients as needed, and fostering spiritual growth. Additional duties may include supporting other ESL teachers, as well as the Educational Services Manager and/or Associate with set up, clean up, and administrative tasks.

 

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Relational

·        Builds intentional relationships with the group and one on one, when possible

·        Participates with other volunteers during devotional and prayer time

·        Helps clients set goals for learning English

·        Tutors individuals during class time

·        Follows up with clients who have missed class or are struggling, getting them caught up on class material

·        Communicates educational needs or other challenges (housing, food, referrals, etc.) of clients to the Educational Services Manager

·        Helps with client shopping once a month

 

Logistical/Administrative

·        Takes attendance

·        Prepares and plans classroom materials, as needed (making copies, special holiday units, etc.)

·        Cleans and sanitizes the room after class

·        Communicates regularly with the Educational Services Manager

·        Collaborates with the other teachers

 

Qualifications

·        Ability to build relationships and communicate with a diverse group of students

·        Organizational and administrative skills

·        Educational background is a plus
