Alpha Grand Rapids is recruiting a Development Director to join our Leadership Team.

Position title: Development Director

Position type: Staff (full-time, salaried)

Department: Development

Reports to: President

Basic function of position: The Development Director is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing all Alpha Grand Rapids (AGR) fundraising, including the major gifts program, annual fund, planned giving, special events, and capital campaigns. He/she works closely with the President, Board of Directors, and Marketing in all development and fundraising endeavors and is responsible for overseeing the Key Relationship Specialist, Community Engagement Manager, and Development Coordinator. The core responsibilities include overall donor development, supervision of the Development Team, and growing Legacy giving.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Fund development

  • Coordinates various meetings between staff and prospective donors to establish relationships, and manages ongoing prospective donor communication
  • Builds a major gifts program including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of donors
  • Accurately tracks and projects income and budgeting, ensuring all major gifts are accounted for
  • Drives the process of donor portfolios, ensuring major donors are appropriately assigned to correct staff for relationship cultivation
  • Builds the planned giving program with a focus on deferred gifts
  • Directs capital campaign strategy
  • Oversees research of prospective donors
  • Makes public appearances/accepts speaking engagements to share information about AGR with the community
  • Maintains gift recognition programs, including the development of a tracking and thanking plan for donor milestones

Events

  • Coordinates special events, such as capital campaign luncheons or networking events
  • Assists Marketing with the spring and fall fundraising events by soliciting corporate sponsors, table hosts, matching donors, and attendees
  • Maximizes event attendance by promoting events at area churches, schools, and businesses

Managing

  • Lead the Development Team through individual check ins and team meetings, ensuring goals and KPIs are monitored and achievable
  • Maintain a climate that attracts, retains, and motivates top quality personnel, both paid and volunteer
  • Recruit, train, appraise, supervise, support, develop, promote, and guide qualified personnel, both paid and volunteer, and plan for succession
  • Create, support, and oversee cross-functional teams throughout AGR
  • Empower staff and volunteers by:
  • Transmitting AGR’s values, vision, and direction;
  • Engaging people in the meaning of AGR;
  • Respecting and using the skills, expertise, experience, and insights of people;
  • Providing direction and resources, removing barriers and helping develop people’s skills; articulating expectations and clarifying roles and relationships;
  • Encouraging people to question organizational assumptions and ask strategic questions; ensuring quality decision-making;
  • Anticipating conflicts and facilitating resolution;
  • Engaging people in process as well as tasks; encouraging people to use their power;
  • Practicing God-given authority and accepting responsibility;

  • Coaching people to success.

Other

  • Engages in weekly Leadership team meetings as well as quarterly strategic planning meetings
  • Participates in all required staff meetings
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications for the Position

Education: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in relevant field

Prior work experience: At least five years of experience in roles that specialize in relationship building and/or sales, as well as experience in supervising staff.

Language proficiency: English required

Skills and abilities

  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to interact well with both individuals and groups from a variety of ethnicities and backgrounds
  • Ability to represent AGR in the community, handle multiple responsibilities at once, manage time well, and take initiative
  • Desire to get out of the office and seek out partnerships with donors, churches, foundations, and community organizations

Supervision exercised: Direct supervision of the Key Relationship Specialist, Community Engagement Manager, and Development Coordinator

Time to perform full range of duties after entry into the position: Six months

Pay: $65,000.00 – $75,000.00 per year
