Job Title: Chief Financial Officer

 

Department: Administration

 

Reporting Relationship: Chief Executive Officer

 

Days Worked: Daily M-F

 

Required Hours: Full-time; 40 hours per week, exempt

 

Benefit Eligible: Yes

 

Position Summary:

 

This individual manages and oversees all financial and corporate affairs of the organization and provides full reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors. This individual also is a member of the Executive team that provides visionary leadership and direction for the operations of the organization.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Finance:

 

  • Manage and oversee all financial affairs of the organization

  • Establish and maintain proper financial policies, financial procedures, and internal controls, develop and maintain calendars and checklists

  • Maintain proper documentation of all accounting transactions and journal entries

  • Manage business and financial operations, maintain specific knowledge of organization income, expenditures, assets and liabilities

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and provide regular reporting

  • Develop the annual budget, monitor variances and provide regular reporting

  • Maintain banking relationships and reconcile accounts

  • Cooperate with the auditing firm in the preparation of the annual audit

  • Prepare required government and licensing reports and ensure timely filing

  • Provide budget or cost analysis as needed for executive management or program directors

  • Manage the endowment fund in coordination with the investment management firm

  • Participate in quarterly Board Finance Subcommittee meetings

  • Schedule and participate in annual or as needed Board Investment Subcommittee meetings

 

Management:

 

  • Supervise finance and human resource assistant(s)

  • Participate in monthly or as needed Executive meetings, provide financial insight and leadership

  • Assist with decisions regarding the management of office functions (IT, facilities, etc.)

 

 

Human Resources:

 

  • Oversee human resource administration in coordination with the HR consultant

  • Assist with development of human resource policies and procedures, develop and maintain calendars and checklists

  • Maintain employee handbook and proper employment forms

  • Maintain proper documentation of personnel information

  • Manage administration of employee benefits

  • Monitor and respond to Michigan UIA claims

Fundraising:

  • Manage the system structure and use of the donor database

  • Maintain proper donation records, ensure timely receipting

  • Provide reporting and regular mailing lists for fundraising department, provide mailings for tax receipts and pledge statements

  • Participate in fundraising event administration; manage subsequent data entry to completion

  • Review and edit fundraising materials

 

Miscellaneous:

 

  • Maintain insurance coverage(s) and handle claims

  • Oversee equipment and supply purchases and inventory, manage leases and service agreements

  • Other special projects as determined by the Chief Executive Officer

 

Position Requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting required (CPA preferred) with at least 5 years of experience in a finance management role; non-profit experience a plus

  • Expertise in Excel with knowledge of advanced features

  • Expertise in Word with knowledge of merge features

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • High attention to detail

  • Ability to learn, teach, and inform

  • Ability to remain focused and calm under pressure of multiple tasks and interruptions
