Food Service - Full-time

The Opportunity
This “hands-on” leadership position will be responsible for dining operations and preparation of healthy and flavorful meal options for private households, including special events/entertaining. In partnership with the Sous Chef, this position will maintain high quality standards regarding menu planning, food preparation, presentation, service, sanitation, and safety. 

Hours/Schedule
Full-time position in Grand Rapids, MI, with an expectation to provide meal service as needed. Specific schedule will generally be communicated by the Personal Assistant and is proactively coordinated to ensure the needs of the family are met. Flexibility in schedule is essential with ability to work weekends and travel with family to assigned locations required.

What You’ll Do

Food Preparation

  • Prepares and serves breakfast, evening meals, and occasional mid-day meals; prepares and stocks meals for family’s personal preparation as needed; develops menus and recipes supporting the family’s preferences, tastes, and style.
    • Communicates on a regular basis with family members, and other staff members on needs for upcoming week(s); gathers feedback and ideas.
  • Provides nutritious, safe, eye-appealing, and properly flavored food; exercises a wide variety of culinary techniques and ensures preparation of an extensive variety of meals; demonstrates flexibility in accommodating individual tastes and requirements.
  • Plans and executes meal preparation and service for small to large dinner parties and special events ranging from casual to formal service.  When necessary, oversees the work of contracted wait staff.
  • Forecasts food items required; controls food cost by establishing purchasing specifications, product storage requirements, and waste control procedures; ensures supplies are utilized properly and cost effectively.
  • Purchases food items on a regular basis from local markets and/or other preferred vendors.
  • Identifies and selects cuts of meat, poultry, shellfish, fish, game, vegetables, fruits, etc.
  • Prepares all food while retaining maximum amount of desirable nutrients as well as low-fat, low-sodium, low-cholesterol, vegan, vegetarian, and low-calorie meals.

Kitchen Maintenance and Operations

  • Ensures freshness of food stock through proper storage, labeling, and inspection.
  • Ensures kitchen, dining areas, and equipment are safe and sanitary.
  • Follows careful operating procedures of all equipment, utensils, and machinery; establishes maintenance schedules in conjunction with manufacturer’s instructions for all equipment.
  • Orders, receives, and stores all food, equipment, cleaning, detergent, and paper supplies to ensure minimum loss from waste.

General Responsibilities

  • Works with current chef to ensure service availability to meet the family’s needs. 
  • Travels at various times to assigned family properties to provide meal service and food provisioning.
    • Coordinates ordering, receiving, and stocking all family properties with beverages, snacks, breakfast items, etc. as needed.
    • Ensure readiness of kitchen at all family properties prior to family’s arrival; at end of trip, thoroughly cleans all kitchen areas, including cupboards and appliances.
  • Exercises open communications with full-time Sous Chef and other household staff.
  • Displays team-building skills and handles all assignments with a positive and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Exercises open communications with family members and other household employees.


What You’ll Bring

  • Degree from a post-secondary culinary arts training program.
  • Personal chef experience in a private household setting desirable.
  • Variety of culinary and catering experience with healthy and fresh meal preparation techniques.  Ensures a variety of meals offered and demonstrates flexibility in accommodating individual tastes and any dietary requirements.
  • Kitchen leadership experience is highly desirable.
  • Excellent knowledge of household table etiquette, service, and entertaining protocol.
  • Demonstrated creativity and artistic presentation in food preparation and table service, whether dining is casual or formal.
  • Warm and engaging personality.  Able to converse with all members of the family.  Informal and steady approach.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, courtesy, respect, enthusiasm, and graciousness in service; display good listening skills.
  • Must be a responsible, dedicated, and dependable person of highest integrity; self-motivated.
