Carpenter/ Laborer ($18-$28 an hour)

Job Description:

Under general supervision is responsible for performing a variety of unskilled and skilled tasks; works as a member of a crew engaged in construction tasks and other related assigned duties.

Scope:

The Carpenter is responsible for the full range of rough and finished skilled carpentry work including cabinetry. Incumbents work from blueprints, specifications, drawings and instructions to design, build, remodel, retrofit, maintain and repair various types of facilities and structures; inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations, inspect related work by contracts; estimate cost, time and materials for carpentry projects.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Examples of key duties are interpreted as being descriptive and not restrictive in nature. The following duties are both trade specific and shared responsibilities.

• Designs, constructs, remodels, retrofits and repairs interior and exterior structures made of a variety of materials. Works with light-gauge and load-bearing steel framing for interior partitions, exterior framing, and curtain wall construction.

• Follow blueprints and building plans to meet the needs of the clients.
• Measure, cut, or shape wood, plastic, and other materials
• Use a variety of different hand and power tools to cut and shape wood, plastic, fiberglass, or drywall. Commonly used hand tools include squares, levels, and chisels, as well as many power tools such as sanders, circular saws, and nail guns.
• Cleans up work area and equipment when job is completed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or possession of a General Educational Development Certificate (GED) is preferred. Must have reliable transportation to report to different job sites as work requires it.

Good knowledge of basic manual labor practices, methods, tools and materials; and some knowledge of the hazards of the work. Ability to perform heavy manual labor over an extended period of time in varying weather conditions; ability to understand verbal instructions and to read and follow written instructions; ability to learn and perform more responsible tasks; ability to use hand and mechanical tools and equipment; and the ability to courteously and tactfully communicate with fellow workers, supervisors, other members of the organization, and the public in giving and receiving information.
