April 29|Work It Matters Series
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. Genesis 2:2-3
Read: Genesis 2:1-15
Listen: Genesis 2
You might not agree with the statement, “work is good.” You might even strongly disagree especially if you hate your job, your work is especially difficult, dangerous or demanding, or you work with intolerable people. Work might be many things to you, but “good” is probably not one of them.
Scripture tells a different story. In the opening chapters of our Bible, we meet a God who works and calls that work “good.” This good God, who does good work, then assigns ongoing good work to his image-bearers—human beings (Genesis 2:15). We see that work was initially designed by our Creator to reflect his image and accomplish needed tasks. While it was made more difficult following Adam’s disobedience (the Fall), God did not design work as punishment.
Work, which we can define as “creating order out of chaos,” matters to God. He is intricately concerned about all of our work. This week we’re going to rethink our assumptions about work, what it means to “create order out of chaos” and how we can find satisfaction in work. Seeing work as God sees it makes all the difference when the alarm sounds every morning.
As you welcome God into your week and think about the work which awaits, ask him to help you gain a proper perspective on your work. Pray a prayer similar to this, “Father, I confess that often my attitude towards my work is negative. I need the help of your Spirit to see work as you see it. Help me to view all of my work as ‘good’ and worthy of my best. May you be pleased with my effort today.” Download the lock screen below to help.
