TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Matthew 6:26

Listen: Matthew 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

We determine our value in different ways. For some of us, it’s the bottom line on the paycheck. For others, it’s the rapid climb up the corporate ladder or the achievements of our children. It also might be recognition on social media or inclusion in a group of friends.

We can spend a significant amount of time trying to prove to others that we are valuable and worthy of love and attention. But what if our value, as followers of Jesus, is not based on any of these things? What if our value is based on what Jesus has done for us?

The Apostle Paul wrote the book of Philippians that has been the basis for much of this series. He also wrote a letter to a church in the city of Corinth. To the Jesus followers in that city he wrote, “You are not your own; you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19c-20a). The “price” Paul refers to is the blood of Jesus Christ.

Paul’s contemporary, the Apostle Peter, put it this way, “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed…but with the precious blood of Christ…” (1 Peter 1:18-19a). We have value not because of money, achievement or status. We have ultimate value because Jesus paid the ultimate price to bring us into relationship with him!

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Write a prayer of thankfulness to God today by inserting your name into 1 Corinthians 6:19-20. It might look something like this, “Thank you Lord that I, Trent, am not my own. I have been bought at a tremendous price, the blood of Jesus. Help me to see my value as you see me.” Take this short prayer with you and pray it at noon, in the evening and before your head hits the pillow tonight.
