Trust

Trust is a tricky thing. Just when you think you can trust someone, it seems they often find a way to let you down. When you think you’ve earned someone’s trust, you find out they’ve been checking up on you.
Though trust is tricky, there is one person we can trust—God. Yet we often have a hard time doing so. Paul says, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4.19). Part of the reason we don’t trust God is because we want to substitute “needs” with “luxuries” or “wants.”
We don’t feel like God is meeting our needs when we drive a 1999 Toyota Corolla and our college roommate just purchased a 2016 Audi. We don’t feel like God is meeting our needs when we start to think about putting four kids through college. Instead of trust, we feel fear.
Paul is encouraging a group of poor people, who had just given a wildly generous gift they probably weren’t able to afford, to trust God. God invites you to trust him, to trust he can provide your needs and to be content when those needs are met.
Today, say to God, “I trust you.” Memorize Philippians 4.19, emphasizing to yourself the difference between needs and luxuries.
