Jesus replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Luke 18:27
Read: Luke 18:24-30
Listen: Luke 18
The rich young man walks away from Jesus sad. He can’t let go of his wealth to follow Jesus. The disciples watch in shock and wonder who can ever enter God’s kingdom. If this man, who seems so good and has it all together, can’t—what hope is there for anyone else? Jesus reminds them that what’s impossible for humans is possible with God.
Jesus’s disciples give us an example to follow. They leave behind boats and businesses to follow him. They give up reputations and relationships. They don’t always get it right, but as they spend time with Jesus, God changes their mission to match his. They trade earthly treasures for treasures that can never be taken away (Matthew 6:19-21). They eventually come to trust Jesus so much they are willing to die for him. They come to know the real life Jesus offers now and for eternity.
We need God’s help to leave our things behind and trust him fully. It might take time and effort to turn to him over and over. But as we spend time with Jesus, he transforms us from the inside out. Through his Holy Spirit, we become new people with a new mission. Jesus can shape our desires, decisions and lives to match his kingdom values. Watch this video clip as Pastor Aaron Buer explains what Jesus gives us when we transfer our trust to him.
Commit to spending time with Jesus. Decide your next step in your relationship with Jesus, whether it’s memorizing Scripture, prioritizing weekend service attendance or discussing his Word in a small group. New small groups will form this fall and are a great place to grow your relationship with Jesus. Start thinking today about joining a small group in September.
Develop spiritual roots and tap in the power of God’s word by memorizing monthly a Bible verse! View previous verses at beyondtheweekend.org/biblememorypractice.
