TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” John 13:8

Read: John 13:4-10
Listen: John 13

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Peter’s not having it. He doesn’t want Jesus to wash his feet. But like so many things in life, there’s more going on. Jesus is doing something bigger. This is about washing away sin. That’s what his conversation with Peter makes clear. Jesus takes the most ordinary of acts, an act beneath someone of his stature, and uses it as a powerful object lesson. He’s teaching not only about service but about salvation. The message is clear: everyone needs to be washed clean.

We need Jesus to wash us of the sin in our life. John, the disciple who recorded the encounter we’ve been looking at this week, would later write: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Jesus, through his death on the cross, offers a washing of our heart. Jesus’s way of life is the blessed life. When we accept his gift of life, we receive the blessing of our sins washed away and eternal life with God. We also have access to the blessed life now because we are grounded in a new identity.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

If you’ve never accepted Jesus’s offer of life, make the decision today. If you have chosen to follow Jesus today or sometime before, one great step of obedience is baptism. The water of baptism symbolizes the washing away of sin. If you’d like to begin a conversation about accepting Jesus’s offer of life or baptism, reach out to us at btw@adabible.org.
