The Wardrobe

What we wear is what others first see about us. Our wardrobe is more than body drapery. It can indicate our profession, our preferences and even what we think about ourselves. Clothes matter because they’re a projection of who we are. Paul emphasizes to the Colossian Christians (and us) to pay attention to what they “put on.” He’s not talking about physical clothes, but spiritual clothing.
This spiritual clothing should be worn on a moment-by-moment basis. He says to “put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” This clothing emanates out from our heart toward others. In Colossians 3.11 he says, “Christ is all and in all.” So, what should come out of our heart, is Christ.
Jesus lived Colossians 3.12 toward others: compassionate, kind, humble, gentle and patient. He drew people toward truth not just through his words, but how he behaved toward them. His actions were radically different and compelling. They were life giving and life changing.
When we wear these attributes of Jesus, people catch his aroma. Just as theater popcorn draws people to the concession counter, these five attributes draw people to “life.” If we say we’re Jesus followers but insist on wearing our old nature (Colossians 3.8-9), we make Jesus irrelevant and ridiculous.
Today, begin using the bookmark given out last weekend to help you remember Colossians 3.12-13. Keep it close as an encouragement to ask God for help to “put on” Christ as you approach difficult situations this week.
