Luke 2.8-11

“For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2.11 KJV). The angel heralding the good news of the birth of Jesus proclaims three titles: Savior, Christ, and Lord. Today we’re going to look at the title Savior.

Isaiah 53 foretells of our Rescuer: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him [Jesus] the iniquity of us all” (Isaiah 53.6).

Everyone has turned their heart from God and needs to be rescued. But Jesus didn’t go down to hell and beat up the devil nor did he travel the globe conquering evil kings (at least not yet). Instead, Jesus took our place, acted as our substitute and took our sin upon himself. This is the kind of Savior the angels announce on the night of Jesus’ birth, One who was prophesied to rescue his people from their sins.

Jesus is our Rescuer. While he delivers us from an eternity separated from God, he also delivers us from ourselves. Jesus brings us eternal life, not just in quantity (forever), but in quality. We’re no longer bound to live inward, self-gratifying lives. Instead, Jesus offers us abundant life centered on humble servanthood and rich communion with God.

As you begin your day, take a few minutes to read Isaiah 53.1-9. These prophetic verses tell of the Savior and how he will rescue his people from their sins. May we marvel and worship at the incredible love God has displayed toward us through Jesus Christ.
