READ Proverbs 26 (listen). WRITE out one verse and SHARE with someone.

Proverbs 26 is part of the second collection of Solomon’s proverbs, collected by King Hezekiah (Proverbs 25-29). This section contains vibrant and varied proverbs with many explicit comparisons. Some of the proverbs are longer in length, with two or more verses. Fools are the subject of the first part of the chapter.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Like a snow-cooled drink at harvest time is a trustworthy messenger to the one who sends him; he refreshes the spirit of his master. Proverbs 25:13

Read: Proverbs 25:13

Listen: Proverbs 25

TODAY’S MESSAGE

There was no such thing as a refrigerator or freezer when Proverbs was written. We take for granted that moment an ice-cold drink hits our lips on a hot day. For them, this rare treat probably stood out as a uniquely refreshing experience. It was this experience to which the writer of this proverb compares a trustworthy messenger. There were no cell phones, postal services or cars at this time. You had to send a messenger if you wanted to communicate with someone outside of your home. Proverbs 26:6 from today’s The Wisdom Challenge talks about the perils. Trustworthiness mattered.

A trustworthy person still stands out as someone who does what they say they will do. These people are refreshing. They make promises they can keep and keep the promises they make.

Trustworthiness matters today. We may be quick to make promises as a parent but a bit slower to follow through. We might promise to get a job done at work but take our time doing it. We refresh those around us and demonstrate the character of our Heavenly Father when we do what we say we will do.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Spend a few minutes in prayer and reflect on the promises you make. Ask yourself, “Are there promises I have made and need to follow up on?” Then take the appropriate steps to do so today.
