READ Proverbs 27 (listen). WRITE out one verse and SHARE with someone.
He who gathers crops in summer is a prudent son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. Proverbs 10:5
Read: Proverbs 10:5
Listen: Proverbs 10
Today’s proverb was written in an agrarian culture. Harvest was the most critical season of the year and the culmination of a whole year of hard work. The financial stability of an entire family hinged on this season. What’s more, they couldn’t push the harvest till next month. When it was harvest time, you better be out there. Solomon’s readers instantly understood this.
Getting out during harvest isn’t just about finding motivation and not hitting the snooze button in that season. The harvest is just another early morning in a long line of early mornings and hard work: plow, plant, grow and finally harvest. Getting through month after month of hard work required good work habits. When it was time, they got out and harvested.
Many of our routines are disrupted during this time. We are tempted to build a stronger relationship with our snooze button, stop doing The Wisdom Challenge or discontinue some other healthy practice. However, our good habits matter. It’s time to start and continue healthy habits especially now. Habits and practices matter much more than motivation and inspiration. Our habits affect our families, coworkers, friends and neighbors.
Ask God to help reveal to you how you are doing in this area. Are there habits you need to start/restart? Make a plan to do that starting today.
