TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do. James 1:25

Read: James 1:25

Listen: James 1

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The first chapter of James is challenging for his readers to hear. It would be natural for them wonder, “Why should we listen?” James believes that if they change their actions, they will experience freedom and blessing. He believes that God doesn’t just give rules to follow, he gives a different way to live. And it’s better.

James knows his readers will experience pain, loss and tragedy. They won’t necessarily materially prosper if they follow God, but they will be blessed. Blessed that they get to live life the way God created them to live.

Today we are just as guilty of believing we know what’s best for us. We think that following God is about him helping us get to where we are going. Instead, Jesus offers an alternate destination and way for us to live. Often we fear that if we follow him, we won’t get what we want. We will spend our time, money, talents and emotions on others and not be taken care of or have anything left.

In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus compares one who hears his teaching and applies it to a builder who builds with a solid foundation. Though storms, floods and wind came, the building stood firm. The same is true of us if we build our lives on Christ. We will have a foundation to withstand the pain, joy, tragedy, fortune and loss of this world. A blessing worth pursuing.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Consider this question as we wrap up the week, “Do you really believe that living the Jesus way is better?” Journal in a notebook or type in your mobile this question and your answer. Add to it your hopes and fears. Pray for God to help you place your hopes and fears in his hands.
