Psalm 34.8

David is hiding in a cave while on the run from King Saul, the man he’s served faithfully for years. In this moment of difficulty comes this incredible verse, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refuge in him” (Psalm 34.8).

When we enter seasons of difficulty, we all take refuge in something. We all have ways of dealing with the stress that help us cope—temporary anesthetics to help dull the pain. Some people lean into work, others into alcohol or drugs, and others into unhealthy relationships. All of these are ways of taking shelter from pain. Watch the video clip below from the weekend message to remind you of this truth.

David proposes for us another way—take refuge in God. His awesome invitation, “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34.8a), implores us to wholly trust God. Instead of tasting the refuge of alcohol, food, or images on a computer screen, taste the refuge of God Almighty. He will not fail you or leave you wanting.

Today, examine your heart for something you might be taking shelter in other than God. Begin by turning back to God. Ask for his forgiveness and then confess your desire to trust him alone. If there’s a coping mechanism you need to let go of today, tell a close friend or reach out to a pastor or small group leader. They will help you with the next step to taking your refuge in God.
