Whatever you do, work at it with all of your heart, as working for the Lord…It is the Lord Christ you are serving.  Colossians 3:23-24

Read: Colossians 3:23-24

Listen: Colossians 3

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The work we do is spiritual at the core. All our work is both for the benefit of someone else and for Jesus, our Savior and Master. When we work, we are ultimately serving Jesus and advancing his kingdom. This was true in the first-century Colossae, and it’s true for us today. Watch the video clip below as Senior Pastor Jeff Manion explains.

This was not always the case. For instance, in the Middle Ages (5th-15th centuries), others would consider work “spiritual” only if you were a monk, priest or nun. Only work completed in, through and for the Church was considered spiritual. It changed when the Reformers (Luther, Calvin, and others) saw all work—sacred and secular, intellectual and manual—as a way of serving God. Normal, everyday work is sacred and is done “for an audience of One.”

It is important to remember that work we might call “common” matters to God. Making tacos and serving them through a drive-thru window matters to God. Cleaning the floor of an elementary school is valued by God. So is plowing snow in the middle of the night.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Write or send a “thank you” note to someone you know who faithfully performs quality work that we might describe as “common.” Remind them of the importance of what they do and how it makes your life better and more enjoyable. Let them know you appreciate their consistent work.
