TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Today’s verses are an often-quoted passage of Scripture. It tells the importance of Scripture and how God uses it to make us more like Jesus. Instead of doing the things in today’s verse, Pastor Kevin Harney suggests that many of us are content to merely “snack” on Scripture. Kind of like when we impulsively grab a few chips or a granola bar as we pass by our pantry. Instead, he suggests we should “feast” on Scripture in our 2021 Chair Time. Unlike snacking, feasts require planning and execution—they don’t happen by accident. One has to plan it out, purchase the right items at the store and then cook. But a feast nourishes in a way that a snack just can’t.

At least two small shifts could help us move from snacking to feasting in our Chair Time. (1) The first is committing to read the Bible every day. As the passage above describes, reading the Bible is useful and equips us for every good work. However, we need to take the time to study it regularly with a plan. (2) The second shift is to make time to listen to the voice of God. This could come from Scripture, in creation, through godly people or other means. God uses many things to get our attention, convict us and direct us. But neither of these shifts promises radical change right away. Instead, they are shifts that help us move closer to God in small steps each day. Over time, these small moves can add up to massive change.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Starting January 4, we’ll be offering (right under this In Your Chair Time Today section) a plan to read through the New Testament in a year. If you want to make a shift toward feasting on scripture this year, commit to open the Beyond the Weekend each day. If the shift you want to make is with a new way to pray through listening, check out this Chair Time Prayer Guide.
