Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. Acts 20:28b
Read: Acts 20:27-28
Listen: Acts 20
Paul leaves the Ephesian church elders with a strong metaphor for how much the church needs their guidance and protection. Herding sheep is very common in their world. A valuable source of income, sheep are extremely vulnerable to attack from carnivores and thieves. A good shepherd knows his sheep, guides them to food and water, tends to their injuries and protects them from predators.
God put a design of protection in place for the church. Spiritually mature leaders are appointed to watch over their people (1 Timothy 3:1-15). These leaders (called elders and deacons) spiritually guide and protect the teaching and application of God’s Word. Although Paul was addressing church elders, the whole flock is called to watch out for each other. Looking around, we can easily find someone to protect and bless. All of the flock is called to encourage one another and build each other up (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
Pray, “Father, please lead, guide, grow and protect our church leaders so they can do the same for others in the flock. Help me be aware of those in my church who need my encouragement, help and protection. Allow me to bless them with the blessings you’ve given me. Amen.”
