TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33

Read: Matthew 6:33-34
Listen:
Matthew 6

TODAY’S MESSAGE

This series is called “Just Don’t.” It’s a look at some of Jesus’s warnings in the Sermon on the Mount. Intermingled in these warnings are things Jesus tells his listeners to do. One of those is “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well” (Matthew 6:33). This is the positive side of don’t worry. Jesus is trying to help his listeners understand that living the way God created them to live, actually doing the things Jesus said, will help them find real life. It’s a life built around God and others instead of a life focused on ourselves.

Watch this video clip as Pastor Aaron Buer tells us that we can know what we are trusting based on what we are chasing. We seek first God’s kingdom when we put into practice the teachings of Jesus we’ve been studying all summer. Seeking God’s kingdom requires a change in our hearts, not just our actions. It’s a daily commitment to God’s values and not the values of our culture.

This week we’ve been challenged to find our security in God and not our possessions. We’ve looked at the difference between worry and trust. This weekend we will look at what Jesus really meant when he said not to judge others.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Read Matthew 7:1-6 to prepare for this weekend’s services. Read it in a few different versions or read through the notes about the passage using a Study Bible. Even though it is a holiday weekend, make it a priority to worship with the church community in person or online. Ask God to open your heart for what he wants you to get out of the service.
