For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Luke 19:10
Read: Luke 19:1-10
Listen: Luke 19
Jesus presents his mission as coming to save lost people. His work as a teacher and healer all point to the good news that Jesus is God-in-flesh, rescuing people from sin and death. This shocks people in his day. They have such a high view of God and his justice they can’t imagine God would welcome sinners to his table. Yet Jesus regularly eats with tax collectors and sinners, the least of their society. Jesus reveals that the good news is God welcomes people to his table not because of how good they are but because God is good and merciful. People receive salvation as a gift when they repent (change their minds) about their sins and put their faith in Jesus.
Today, due to Jesus’s teachings and the notion of God’s love, we may have difficulty recognizing we are sinners in need of God’s salvation. As a result, “Jesus saves” can become a cliché. We see it on highway billboards and posters at ballgames. We can see it and think we know what it means—but honestly not understand it.
Jesus as Savior should make us uncomfortable. It requires admitting we need one. Our culture tells us we don’t need anyone and we can figure it out on our own. Jesus as Savior tells us we have a problem we can’t solve. It’s an inconvenient truth that can cause us to respond in different ways. Sometimes we lash out at the messenger, dismiss it by telling ourselves we are fine, or comfort ourselves by comparing ourselves to someone else. The proper response, however, is to listen humbly and acknowledge our need for him. When we do, the Savior welcomes us in.
