Text: Colossians 3.23-24
The Apostle Paul, writing to the Jesus-followers in Colossae, includes this sentence, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3.23). We’re to be faithful in every detail of our work, even in the smallest, most boring, details. Why? Because we’re working for the approval of God, not the approval of others. In the end it’s God who rewards, not the wage we receive here on earth.
Our jobs, paid or unpaid, are often places of mundane redundancy. Responding to emails, changing dirty diapers, creating lesson plans, and balancing a spreadsheet are not tasks that typically excite us to spring out of bed and fly off to work. But as Paul reminds us, we’re called to be faithful in the little things. When we are, we reflect the character of God to a watching world.
The need for faithfulness applies to all of our different environments. Today, consider this week’s One Big Question: What is one area in your life you need God’s strength to remain faithful? Discuss this with your small group, a close friend, or your family after dinner.
May we represent Christ well in our work, families, and church by faithfully completing each task he’s given us—living for an audience of One.
