Text: John 21.15-19
It was an awkward situation: a bragging, outgoing—but humiliated—disciple was asked the same difficult question three times by Jesus, “Simon son of John, do you love me [more than these]?” In response to Peter’s answers, Jesus said, “Feed my lambs…Take care of my sheep” (John 21.15-17).
As the Good Shepherd, Jesus was now committing the care of his flock, the Church, to the disciple who had failed in spectacular fashion just days before. Now, rather than denying Jesus three times, he three times affirmed his love for the Lord. Peter’s restoration was complete.
While some sinful choices will permanently close some doors and end some relationships, the heart of God desires restoration. It’s what he demonstrates as he welcomes back Peter. Thank God for the restoration he’s provided in your life and pray for a heart that seeks restoration (where possible).
