Massive Capacity for Growth

Read: Mark 4:30-34
Listen: Mark 4
Jesus uses the analogy of a seed sprouting into a tree. He focuses on the very tiny mustard seed, noting that the fruit of that seed is a pretty large plant. The point is that God does a lot with very little. God uses tiny moments of faithfulness to make a massive impact.
In many ways, this is the story of Jesus. He was born into poverty in a backwater province of Rome. The disciples he chose were nobodies, but God does great things through them. The same is true today. God doesn’t call us all to preach before thousands of people, write best-selling books or run huge organizations. Yet, he uses the tiny moments of faithfulness in each of our lives for massive growth.
These tiny moments matter. It’s investing in our marriage, which God uses to impact our kids’ and grandkids’ marriages. It can be serving in children’s ministry, where kids are captivated by Jesus as a result of our faithful service. Maybe it’s just showing grace in a tense situation or not participating in gossip at work so that God can use that to work in a coworker’s heart.
Sometimes we can’t see how God is at work, but we need to keep in mind that he uses tiny acts of faithfulness for absolutely massive growth in ourselves and those around us.
At the end of each week, we ask ourselves what we have learned and how to respond to the passages. What is one tiny moment of obedience you need to begin or continue? Write it down in your journal and commit to it today.
