Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment… Ecclesiastes 12:13-14a
Read: Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
Listen: Ecclesiastes 12
The author finishes his thoughts on life and says it all comes down to this—fear God and keep his commandments. To enjoy life now and live without worry about the future, we need to respect God for who he is and take what he asks us to do seriously.
Our culture often rejects the idea of being accountable. But the Ecclesiastes author warns us our obedience matters to God who knows everything we do and our most hidden thoughts. If you don’t believe God is worthy of respect, then you won’t make obeying him a priority.
God is the Creator, the Savior of mankind, and perfect in every way. Our appropriate response to him should be submissive reverence, respect and obedience. We don’t need to be afraid because God is as loving and forgiving as he is judging. At a high price to himself, God provides the way to pass through judgment by faith in Jesus’ death on the cross (see 1 John 4:14,18).
Forgiveness through Christ isn’t a license to disobey. It’s actually the best reason to obey. As you go before God today, pray, “Forgive me Father for my tendency toward disobedience. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, help me to see when I disobey—and experience your forgiveness as I grow in my desire and ability to obey you.”
