Text: Romans 8.15-17
In the Roman world there was a huge difference between being a slave and being a son. A slave lived in fear, with none of the freedom or privileges enjoyed by the son. It’s similar to those who’ve placed their faith and trust in Jesus: we’re not slaves, but adopted children. The Holy Spirit within us bears witness that we are God’s children and also his heirs. An heir is entitled to what their benefactor promises them. Imagine what that means to God’s adopted children!
Here are some things we inherit when we accept Christ: citizenship in heaven (Philippians 3.20), our own room in God’s house (John 14.2), power of the living God within us (1 Corinthians 6.19), the ability to do greater works than his Son (John 14.12), eternal life (John 3.16), all knowledge (1 Corinthians 1.5), faith, hope, and love (1 Corinthians 13.12-13) and much, much more.
As you spend time with God today, write out Romans 8.16-17, then spend time journaling what it means to you, personally, to be an heir of God. Be sure to thank him for his abundant graciousness.
