Paul understood the parent-child relationship can be riddled with complex emotions and experiences. Every parent starts out hoping to love their child well and raise them to be healthy adults. The reality is, however, our wounds, confusion, and our own past can create significant hurdles to loving our children well.
Pastor Manion highlighted three environments in the sermon this past weekend: parents with children still in the home, parents with adult children who blew it, and people with less than admirable experiences with their own parents. He then encouraged us to replace any guilt, shame, or regret we might carry with a renewed grasp of God’s love.
To Jesus-followers in Ephesus Paul wrote, “And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Ephesians 3.17-18).
Paul’s hope, regardless of your parental shortcomings and failures, is for you to understand how much God loves you. Whether you’re currently raising children, now have adult children, or are recovering from a difficult childhood, Paul’s plea is that you understand and channel God’s love.
