TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10b

Read: John 10:10
Listen: John 10

TODAY’S MESSAGE

Jesus doesn’t arbitrate this man’s inheritance dispute (Luke 12:13-15) but turns it into a chance to talk about a universal human desire—the quest to live a fulfilling life. Jesus uses the man who wants his inheritance to point out someone seeking a fulfilling life by accumulating more money and things. Turning from the man to the crowd, Jesus says, “Watch out!” He tells them one can’t find the full life with more money and stuff. Elsewhere in the New Testament, Jesus says the full life is only found in him (John 10:10).

The United States is one of the wealthiest societies in the world. But all this wealth doesn’t seem to correlate with better mental health. Having more stuff doesn’t seem to lead to a more fulfilling life or happiness. Jesus tells us a truly full life involves following, trusting and yielding to him. It isn’t about what we own—but who we become. A full life is about growing and developing in the character of Jesus.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Meditate on this video of the Lord’s Prayer. As you do, allow the words to remind you of God’s care for you and his ability to keep us from pursuing things that never lead to a genuinely fulfilling life.
