Luke 6.43-45

A “wellspring” is defined as “a source or supply of anything, especially when considered inexhaustible, such as a spring, stream, or river.” That’s the analogy Solomon wants us to consider when we take the time, hopefully frequently, to consider the condition of our heart. Solomon knew that what we’re like on the inside eventually will be seen on the outside. If we’re going to fully embrace the life God calls us to live, our hearts need to be actively engaged.

The reality is that our hearts are always “engaged,” either for good or bad. That’s what Jesus was talking about in Luke 6.43-45. Everything involves the heart. What we’re really like on the inside—deep down—will be seen in what we think, say, and do. The “overflow” of our heart needs to be those things that please God and bring glory to him.

As you welcome God into your day, do an evaluation of your heart, your “wellspring.” Under two headings, “Good” and “Bad,” list five words that describe your heart at this moment. Under which heading are the majority of your words? As you engage your heart, ask God for the power of his Spirit to begin the process of removing those in the “Bad” column and increasing those in the “Good” column.
