TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘do this,’ and he does it.” Luke 7:7-8

Read: Luke 7:6-8
Listen: Luke 7

TODAY’S MESSAGE

The centurion believes he doesn’t deserve to have Jesus come into his house. He understands Jesus’s authority. He recognizes and respects Jesus’s power. But there is something more. Peter made a similar point in Luke 5:8 when he said to Jesus, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man.” Both men point to how holy and different Jesus is. They are so awe of him that it exposes their flaws and weaknesses, making them feel unworthy.

One of the most astonishing things about Jesus is he is God AND cares about us. Throughout the Bible, we see Jesus’s tenderness, love and compassion. We also see his majesty, holiness and power. We often focus today more on Jesus’s love and compassion. But we could learn from this centurion and the Apostle Peter as they respond to the holiness of Jesus. May we appreciate Christ’s love, compassion and desire to be with us and be blown away by his power, beauty, glory and holiness. Doing so frees us to offer worship and awe to our holy savior and God.

IN YOUR CHAIR TIME TODAY

Worship is the Spiritual Discipline for June. As you reflect on Christ’s holiness, find a way to worship him today. Maybe you walk outside and reflect on his creativity and the beautiful outdoors. Perhaps you pray a prayer of gratitude or listen to a worship song. Whatever you do—find some way to worship Jesus today.
