Luke 2.1-21
Two thousand years ago a pregnant Jewish teenager and her fiancé were looking for a place to deliver their baby. Though the town of Bethlehem slept unaware, God was not about to let this turning point of history go unnoticed. The Bible says there were shepherds working in a nearby field when, all of a sudden, angels appeared to them! While God could have sent a vision or a prophet to announce the birth of the King, he chose angels instead.
Not only were the angels effective delivery agents, but they fulfilled another unique function: worship. God sent an army of celestial beings to worship the birth of the Son of God. The angel declares to the shepherds, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord,” (Luke 2.11 KJV). Three titles: Savior, Christ, and Lord. This week we’ll unpack these three titles given to this baby born in a stable.
After the angels acclaimed, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests,” (Luke 2.14), the shepherds hurried off to find the baby in a manger with Mary treasuring all these things in her heart. These are all acts of worship.
Following Christmas, it could be easy to get lost in the myriad of Christmas parties or be tempting to wipe our hands of Christmas festivities. Instead, let us steady our hearts to worship the Son of God born in a manger, just as the angels and shepherds did that night.
Take time today to sit in silence and pray, “Thank you God for sending your Son. Thank you that he is the Savior of the world, the Chosen One who will rule over all the earth. Help me to treasure this in my heart.”
