JOB OVERVIEW

 

The Controller is responsible for leading the financial and accounting operations of the organization, ensuring adherence to financial policies, regulatory compliance, and GAAP/IFRS standards. This role directs the implementation of accounting processes, financial reporting, and controls, while overseeing forecasting, and treasury functions. This role will also oversee the budgeting function in collaboration with MSA’s Club Operations Director. The Controller plays a key role in the financial planning and decision-making processes, contributing to both long-term strategies and daily financial operations. This position reports directly to Baton Collective’s Director of Finance & Accounting and manages a team of accounting and financial support professionals at MSA, providing financial management and operational policy development. The Controller leads and mentors MSA’s accounting team, fostering collaboration, accountability, and professional growth. They play a key role in building a high-performing, inclusive culture aligned with the company’s values and strategic goals.

 

LOCATION AND HOURS

  • Office is located in Grand Rapids with hours of operation from 8:00am – 5:00pm
  • Primarily an in-office environment requiring extended periods of desk and computer work. 
  • Local travel around the Grand Rapids area with occasional travel to Muskegon and Holland required.
  • Option to work remotely on Fridays if schedule allows.

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct MSA’s accounting department ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, compliance with GAAP/IFRS, and tax regulations.
  • Oversee the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, including financial statements, balance sheet reconciliations, and variance analysis. 
  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets and improve operational efficiency. 
  • Manage the budgeting and forecasting processes in collaboration with MSA’s Director of Club Operations, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and providing insights to executive leadership. 
  • Direct treasury operations, including cash flow management and risk management. 
  • Collaborate with department heads to support resource planning, financial analysis, and strategic decision-making. 
  • Supervise and mentor accounting and finance professionals, ensuring ongoing professional development and effective team performance. 
  • Monitor and evaluate financial systems, identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing optimization strategies. 
  • Develop and deliver accurate financial reports and executive-level presentations to support strategic decision-making by leadership and ownership.
  • Participate as a member of MSA’s leadership team to continue to drive and build culture aligned with MSA’s values and strategic goals. 

 

ELEMENTS OF SUCCESS

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS) and regulatory compliance. 
  • Proven experience with financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and risk management.
  • Expertise in accounting and financial software (e.g. ERP systems, financial analysis software). 
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with a track record of managing and developing high-performing teams. 
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills with strong business acumen.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial information clearly to both finance and non-finance stakeholders. 
  • Solid understanding of asset management, balance sheet analysis, and operational policy development. 
  • Experience managing financial audits, tax compliance, and internal controls. 
  • Proactive mindset capable of anticipating challenges and driving solutions in a dynamic environment.
  • Utmost discretion in handling sensitive financial information.

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant) or equivalent credential required.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in finance and accounting leadership roles. 
  • Ongoing professional development in financial management, accounting standards, and regulatory changes.
