“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9.6).
Christmas is about an almighty God becoming a child for no reason other than a deep love for people, for us. This child was not just any other child, but a child the world longed for, a promised child given as a gift.
Isaiah 9.6 expectantly places four names upon this child, the first: Wonderful Counselor. Jesus is our wonderful counselor as he guides us through the minefield of life. He is able to help us make wise plans; he is a brilliant strategist. “Wonderful Counselor” encompasses these ideas and so much more.
Life is crazy. The Christmas season is often even crazier. In the midst of it all, we’re reminded of the one who turns chaos into order, the one who has a brilliant, profound, perfect plan for our life—Jesus.
In Matthew 7.24-27, Jesus uses a building analogy to illustrate his teachings on the advantage of living life as he intended. Those who listen to Jesus—this wonderful counselor, wise king, and brilliant strategist—and live their life according to his plans, will be like a house built on a firm foundation.
Today, as you begin this Christmas week, memorize Isaiah 9.6, remembering the yearned-for child becoming our Wonderful Counselor.
