When the “mess becomes messier” we need to be convinced—in the end—God can be trusted. It appears to be true for Jeremiah and it certainly is true for us as we follow God’s call into challenging situations.
If we’re not convinced God can be trusted, especially when things don’t (or can’t) improve, it’s likely we’ll bail and quit. But if we’re confident that God is in control, and trust he ultimately knows best, then we can view our task as something we get to do rather than something we have to do.
Trust in God is critical when we get to this level of faithfulness. It’s what Jeremiah knew as he wrote, “But the Lord is with me like a mighty warrior…He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked” (Jeremiah 20.11-13).
Today, as you welcome God into your day with open hands, write down and memorize Jeremiah 20.13. Keep it in a place where you can refer to it often, especially when you feel overwhelmed and drained.
