Job Description

Other - Part-time

FLSA Status:                             Part-Time, Non-Exempt

Rate of Pay:                             $10.00, hourly

Hours:                                      Weekdays, evenings, weekends, some holidays required (typically 8 hour, rotating shifts)


The Grand Rapids Public Museum (GRPM) is a place of never ending learning and discovery, with programs and exhibits focusing on history, science and culture. The employee culture of the GRPM is one of teamwork, excitement and learning. As an integral part of the West Michigan community, the Museum is open daily to visitors, and also hosts after-hours public events and programs, as well as private events and weddings. The entire GRPM team works to create positive visitor experiences through engaging exhibits and programs, and a safe, clean, welcoming space.

Our Gallery Guard team members are responsible for a safe and courteous environment while providing information for our guests. 


        Promote and maintain a safe environment for staff and visitors.

        Proactively interact with visitors and solve challenges.

        Serve as first response for safety and security of visitors, staff, and physical properties in the area.

        Report unusual or illegal activities to Security Officers immediately.

        Visually and audibly monitor and inspect exhibition areas for physical changes including wear, theft or vandalism.

        Report missing artifacts or irregularities to supervisor.

        Report emergencies, and hazardous or unsanitary conditions to Security Officers.

        Monitor and check doors to prevent access by the public to restricted areas.

        Become familiar with the location of emergency exits.

        Assist Security Officers in emergencies and as required.


Basic Qualifications

        Strong people skills. 

        Agility to learn about Museum programs, facilities, services, and exhibitions and to communicate that information to visitors with a diverse range of needs and backgrounds.

        Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.  


Skills and Experience

        Two years’ experience working with the public, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

        Ability to work tactfully and effectively and follow both oral and written instructions.

        Familiarity with computers. 

        Ability to communicate on a two-way radio.


Education:  High School Diploma


Physical Demands:  Ability to walk up and down stairs and be on your feet during the entire shift.
